The new MTV show The Shannara Chronicles joins several other new post-apolyctitpical dystopian future style science fiction and fantasy shows like The 100, Into The Badlands, and Vikings. I’m, obviously, eating it up because I love just about all fantasy shows that aren’t disastrously terrible; and thus far, it’s been a great immersive and cinematic experience getting into a new worlds mythos. While it still has the feel of a CW teen drama, mtv seems to be pushing a bit on the limits of nudity, and the show will hopefully get a bit grittier as the season progresses.
Vikings season 4 is going to be great! Just from the season 4 teaser we can already see Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) is going to continue to have all sorts of amazing hairstyles. Let’s be honest, she’s the most bad-ass person on the show as a warrior, mother, and earl it’s amazing she has any time for her hair at all. Bjorn Lothbrok (Ragnar’s oldest son played by Alexander Ludwig) looks like he’s going to play a more central role in the upcoming season, and become way more awesome of a character with some large chest and body tattoos.
AMC is seriously killing it with their post-apocalyptic shows like The Walking Dead and now Into The Badlands. Some of the seriously badass female characters are The Widow (played by Emily Beecham) and the clipper Zypher (played by Ellen Hollman). Who doesn’t love a strong woman kicking ass and looking great at the same time? The Barron also has a crazy beard going on, but I’ll leave that for another post, so you’ll just have to watch the show and see it for yourself. Check out Zypher and The Widow in Into The Badlands…
It’s not easy being a zombie in the usual sense of being undead. But Rose Mclver has it a bit easier, and is way better looking than your average zombie flick. Jumping on the white, gray, silver hair color trend Liv Moore looks great as a zombie. While the white hair is a symptom of their condition (along with craving eating brains), Rose Mclver and David Anders pull it off nicely. The show is just another in a long line of police procedurals with a twist like so many others (forever, castle, dexter, mentalist, etc.) but I like it for its brain content and the comic book style graphics in the intro. I imagine it’s a severe pain in the ass to keep their roots bleached out all the time when shooting new episodes.
If you haven’t seen the show, it’s a bit silly, but worth a look to see if ya like it. I just want to be able to use “…but I’m a Zombie” whenever someone asks me about my ridiculously awesome hairstyles or why I’m eating so much hot sauce.
Jodelle Ferland’s hair color is pretty cool in the new syfy series Dark Matter (based on a graphic novel of the same name). Jodelle, Number 5, is so far the outlier on the show. Not a wanted (alleged) criminal like the others. It seems like Dark Matter as a whole is trying for a Firefly kind of feel, but I’m not convinced of Jodelles character being weird enough, maybe I just don’t believe the acted indifference (as I did with Serenity) to the strange dreams and technical curiosity. Anyhow, her blue and green hairstyles is a super cool look for dark wavy hair.
Emilia Clarke’s hair in Game of Thrones Season 5 is looking great. Having dragons like Daenerys Targaryen would probably make anyone look awesome. Check out the fly around gif of her hairstyle in the latest episode. Braided hair is all the rage these days in movies and tv shows. From Katheryn Winnick in Vikings to Marie Avgeropoulos and the “grounders” in The 100. But who has the time for all that? Well when you do here’s some more classy braid inspiration for when you feel like a queen or the mother of dragons.
Lagertha’s Hairstyle in Vikings is super cool all the time. I guess you need bad-ass hair to be a shield maiden. Anyway, the side-braid is so hot right now, like the shaved side undercut that Natalie Dormer made look so hot, but without having to shave the side of your head. And Katheryn Winnick adds all kinds of flair and variations to the braids that makes her look like she is Viking royalty. Must have been nice to not have internet and smartphones so you can sit around and get your hair braided for hours every day.
If you don’t know, Cowboy Bebop is one of the best and to-soon canceled anime shows out there. It was definitely ahead of its time in styling and acceptance of more progressive social norms. One of the regular characters throughout many of the episodes is Fay Valentine. “Fay Fay” has a really great bob cut hairstyle. Similar to Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux, and fitting too for both being scf-fi themed shows. You’ll have to check out the show for a bunch more of her hair, but check out a few screen shots from a couple episodes.
In the latest episode of The 100 (Season 2 Episode 5), Octavia has an awesome grounder hairstyle. A cool Fishtail braid in the back. And a faux undercut little braid on one side like some popular styles worn by Cara Delevingne and Natalie Dormer. I guess out of necessity the grounder people have cooler hairstyles to keep their gritty hair out of the way and looking good. Fitting with the simpler hunter/gatherer lifestyle they also probably have more time and build better communities braiding others hair. Something we could all take a lesson from and get off our phones for a minute.
Natalie Dormer Hairstyles as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors. She seem to like being the queen. If you take the tv show as an accurate portrayal of Anne Boleyn, it would seem she wore a different crown every day of her life. Not that that’s exactly a bad thing. 🙂 Just gives us more costume inspiration for royal affairs! And there are sooo many more styles and hats and accessories that she wore throughout the episodes she was in, you’ll just have to watch The Tudors for yourself!
