Given the impending release of the new Star Wars movies, I thought I’d re-watch the first six and pick out a bunch of the amazing hairstyles the character designers and stylists imagined. The first movie is an ideal place to start with Natalie Portman’s seriously epic hairstyles as the Queen or the Naboo people and in contrast her styles as the Queen’s handmaiden, Padmé.
The Queen obviously needs a bit of an ostentatious style that her position and the gaggle of hand maidens affords. Even though this isn’t practical for real life, some of the styles are super cool. Maybe inspiration for a halloween or themed costume party?
Queen Amidala (while played by the decoy) also wears an awesome black outfit with a matching feathered headdress in mourning for her people and planet when they are invaded. While it’s not specifically a hairstyle, it’s to amazing not to mention.
Natalie Portman also plays the Queens handmaiden as a way of moving more freely amongst other people and as a method of protection from assassination or capture. A reasonable precaution in a time of planetary blockades, invasions, and war. But her styles must then match that character. I think the stylists did a great job embodying that version of her character as well. A simple, happier, slightly nieve and submissive but confident style. The best of those hairstyles is probably the braided style when they go looking for ship parts on tatooine and get into all sorts of trouble. Also, not sure how you keep all that hair clean and looking decent in the desert through multiple days and major dust storms. But I guess that’s just movie magic for ya.
The other decoy hairstyle is when they ask the gungans for help and Padme is dressed to fight. It’s an interesting twist on a basic pulled back hairstyle, but probably a bit much for actually getting anything done. And it definitely wouldn’t stay like that through all the running around.
There are a limited amount of other super cool hairstyles in the movie. But, obviously I like the Hutt’s slave girl with bright blue hair.
After seeing the trailers for the newest Star Wars movie Episode 7 The Force Awakens, I’m not to hopeful for a lot of interesting hairstyles, but I guess we’ll see!
